Driving Ring Road in Iceland

Monday, September 3, 2018

Last week was AMAZING!  Andy flew into Iceland before and thought there was nothing pretty about it!  He did not understand why I wanted to go.  After showing him pictures of what Iceland was made of...it didn't take much to convince him that it was worth visiting!  We are so glad it worked for Seth and Taylor to join us!!

We left Sunday evening and arrived in Iceland at 5:30 a.m Monday morning.  Seth and Taylor were able to pick up their camper van right when we arrived, but Andy and I had to wait until 8:00 a.m.  Seth and Taylor dropped us off at Dunkin Donuts and they went and slept for a couple hours, before we hit the road.  Andy and I were to anxious to sleep so we wondered around between the Dunkin Donuts, Subway and a cute bakery.  We tried walking to the Ocean, but realized how cold, rainy and windy Iceland is.
We started hitting these amazing road side views in the first hour of our trip!

I COULD NOT WAIT TO SEE WILD HORSES!  We first saw horses and they were fenced in and I was sure eventually we would see some with no fences around them.  We found out on the second day that all sheep and horses are owned by someone. They were still so pretty, because the fenced areas were so large that they looked wild!

This water fall was on the side of the road and we were so excited that we pulled over for it!  It ended up being quite small compared to the other waterfalls we saw in the week!  There are waterfalls everywhere! no joke!!

Hraunfossar: OHH I think this waterfall was my favorite!  It wasn't the biggest and it for sure was not the strongest, but it had such pretty blue water, the greenery around it and the layers of the rocks!!!

Deidartunguhver: The first area of Iceland we smelled SULFER!  Andy kept saying how he thought it smelled like Latty, Ohio!
He wasn't too impressed with the smell....
First time cooking in our CAMPER VAN!!  I loved how colorful it was!!!  We would RECOMMEND HAPPY CAMPER 10000000 times!!!!

More road side scenery!!

Kolugljufur Canyon: OHH THIS CANYON/WATERFALL WAS JAW DROPPING!!!!

Glaumbaer: Cute little turf houses!!

Road side views!!! Waterfalls left and right!!!

We woke up and walked a little bit around the town of Akureyri! We talked to a guy from Iceland and he said they saw their first snow that morning in the mountains!  Winter is coming... it already felt like winter!  It is very common to be 45-50 degrees, windy and raining in the summer!!

Godafoss waterfall was SOOO powerful!

There was a hot spring in the cave...

Oh this was just really smelly (Like cow manure and sulfur) and interesting!!!

Dettifoss, Selfoss, and Hafrafilsfoss: This would be my favorite waterfall if the water was blue!  The Canyons were stunning!!

HE IS SUCH A CUTIE!!

Road side views!!

REINDEER!!!

Diamond Beech and the Glacier Lagoon were stunning!  It is crazy how there are mountains of snow and the next mountain over has no snow on it!!  This vacation we would feel like were in Germany and the next hour driving in Alaska, and then on the Moon and so on!

Not only a hour from the Glacier there is this,.......

Skaftafell!  Love the greenery around it!!!  It was a hike to this one!!
EEKK THE SUNSET WAS SO PRETTY!  Sadly enough we did not see any Northern Lights:(

Waking up to the middle of NO WHERE!!!

ANDY FINALLY PULLED OVER SO I CAN PET THE HORSES!!!

Kirkjubaejarklaustur:  Really cool Canyon!!

IF YOU LOOK CLOSE enough you will see PUFFINS!  They are such tiny birds!!!!!

Solheimasandur: The airplane crash in 1973!  Google it if you want information on it;)  I just thought it is cool in pictures... so it was worth 4 miles walking to!

Skogafoss... SADLY enough it was not sunny enough to see the Rainbow!!!

The Myvatn nature Bath was cool!  We suggest going here before the blue lagoon!! Then you will be impressed by this and really impressed by the blue lagoon!!

First day!!!!

Walking to Happy Camper to pick up our van!!! CHILLY WALK!!

Speaking to an Icelandic!

Such a cute diner!!!!!  Would totally recommend!

A been there done that!!!  This pool was in a very amazing location, but the pool itself was disgusting!  Thankfully Andy and I decided to change into our suits before we got there.  We didn't have to use the changing rooms then.  The changing rooms were filthy and no separate changing rooms for men and women!  I would recommend getting the experience;)

OH THIS DAIRY ICE CREAM SHOP WAS ADORABLE!  You literally eat with the cows!!  FOR SURE RECOMMEND placing this on your itinerary!

RECOMMEND... snorkeling with DIVE.IS !  They treated us so good!  We loved our tour guide Eleanor.  She was so spunky and we felt like she was just as excited for us to go!  Like it was her first time going!  BEWARE it is cold!!! LIKE SO COLD!   So cold my lips swelled up!  The water is 37 degrees and we did have dry suits, but IT WAS STILL COLD!  The scenery is unbeleivable and its crystal clear water!  The water is so good to drink!  IT WAS AN AMAZING Experience!!!!

If you look close enough you can see somewhat how my lips swelled up!

OH THE BLUE LAGOON!!!  It was the best place to end our vacation on!  We were glad we did this the last day before we flew out, because we could enjoy it and not feel rushed to get to the next spot!  You can do mud masks here!!!  It is a must if you go to Iceland.  Even if you fly into Iceland for a layover!  It is only 20 minutes from the airport!!  A HUGE HIGHLIGHT of the trip!!  Pictures don't do justice on this one!!!

OH it was an amazing experience!  We were so glad we took the route we did and did longer days of driving the first 2 days!  Golden circle is cool, but if you don't drive the entire ring road you miss out on SOOO MUCH!!  The road side scenery was a huge hit and you miss all of that when you just do Golden Circle!  We are so Thankful for the opportunity and through it all we were amazed by God's Creation!!  ALL GLORY TO GOD!!
